Elmer – the colourful elephant!
This week the Acorn Preschool children have explored the world of colour through the story ‘Elmer’ by David McKee. We have continued with a focus on colours – the children have sorted colourful teddies, painted with colours, danced with colourful scarves and played colour matching games.
As part of our language development focus, the children have explored the meaning of some vocabulary linked to the story. This included elephants tall, elephants short, elephants fat, elephants thin, elephants youngand elephants old. Try to use these words with your children at home to build on their understanding of the words and encourage them to start using them when they speak.
As we continued to explore colour, the Acorns enjoyed watching an experiment which showed them the formation of a rainbow on a plate using skittles. As we watched the rainbow forming, we sang our song from the previous week ‘The Rainbow Song.’ You can find a link on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRTdq0VsLGQ) to watch and sing this song with your child at home.
Our focus number at the moment has been number on 1 –and through watching Numberblocks short videos and practical activities in the Nursery, we are trying to secure the children’s concept of number. Alongside this, we have explored the concept of lots – comparing pictures and saying if it shows ‘1 or lots’
Looking at the features of the face has helped with our counting – noticing 1 nose, 2 eyes etc. Children made the features of the face using play dough.
Stars of the day this week were: Myleigh-Rose, Alex, Rafeef, Imogen and Ava-Rose. Well done for all your hard work and good choices.
