Bonfire Night Bonanza with the Acorns
The Acorn Preschool children have been exploring the wonder of Bonfire night and fireworks. To explore the theme of Bonfire Night, the children were given opportunities to talk about what knew about Bonfire Night. We explored more about fireworks, bonfires and Guy Fawkes. On Monday, the children made their own rockets using sticking pieces together. The children even built a ‘bonfire’ outside (by sweeping up the leaves) and danced to Katy Perry “Firework’ using ribbons, their own firework rockets and instruments.
To build on the excitement about fireworks, the children also enjoyed many other firework themed activities through their play, including large-scale firework drawing outside with chalks, flick painting firework pictures and painting firework pictures too.
This week we introduced a new boat and crane system, which the children loved playing with. They explored how to turn the handle to hook up different items and place them on the back of the boat. This also allowed many children to work on taking turns, as there was only 1 boat.
Book of the week has been ‘Octopus Socktopus’ which has helped develop words which rhyme/sound the same – the children have loved the different words which follow the rhyme of ‘octopus’ – including knickerboctopus, cuckooclocktapus, helicopterpus and toffee chocotopus!
Rhyme of the week was ‘Round and Round the Garden’ – which encouraged the children to make contact and interact with their friends in a fun way.
Outside, we introduced the children to the large hollow building blocks. These are heavy and require lots of team work to support their removal, building with them and then tidying them away again at the end. We were very proud of how well the children did all of these things.
Stars of the day this week were Radley, Alfie, Faith, Freya & Daisy – well done to you all!
