Caring for babies with the Acorn Preschool
Over the last couple of weeks, the Acorn Preschool children have shown a real interest in playing with babies. We have provided some baby clothes and encouraged the children to look after the babies – putting them to sleep, carrying them carefully and singing lullabies to them. Our song of the week was ‘Rock a bye baby‘ and our book of week was ‘The Owl Babies’ by Martin Waddell. The children have also enjoyed looking at photos of themselves as babies on display in the classroom – thank you to parents for sending them in.
The ‘Owl Babies’ story has really helped the children with developing their listening and attention at story time, as they have been able to join in with the words at key parts of the story. The children have also developed their understanding of the characters and the setting of a story.
The children have loved making a variety of owl related craft – painting pictures of owls and creating leaf art and nests for the owls. The children also continued to explore autumn items through their art work.
This week we have been focusing on clapping the beats (syllables) in key words, such as the months and their names. The children are getting very good at tuning in and thinking about ‘how many claps they have in their name.’ Next week we will be looking at whether the children can recognise and find their names. For those who are ready, we will be encouraging them to copy the first letter shapes they see. By the end of the week, we will provide a name card for all the children to take home – It would really help the children with recognising their own name if you would put this up somewhere in the house, so that they are regularly seeing their name in their surroundings.
During our investigation activities, we have focused on using our ‘nose’ to explore a variety of smells. The children were encouraged to decide if they were smells that they liked, or did not like. Strawberry, vanilla and chocolate were keen favourites; curry, garlic and lavender seemed to split the children, and no one liked the fish sauce!
Stars of the day this week were Leon, Addison, Faith and Ruby – well done to you all.
