Happy Chinese New Year!
This week in the Acorn Preschool the children have been comparing the celebrations they have experienced with those for Chinese New Year (which was on Saturday 25thJan) when the Year of the Rat started.
We have learnt, through reading books and watching some short video clips on ‘Lets Celebrate’ via cbeebies, showing how Chinese families prepare for and celebrate Chinese New Year. At the start of the week, we were busy cleaning the role-play house in preparation for putting up our Chinese decorations.
The children explored Chinese writing through mark making with paint and pens. They constructed money wallets and Chinese dragon puppets using their cutting skills and by combining materials, and explored moving their bodies and dragon puppets in different ways to the Chinese music.
The children also noticed that Chinese food is a little different and that funny sticks can be used to eat the food. The story ‘Clever Chopsticks’ showed the children how a Chinese boy was eventually able to show his friends a special skill that he used at home. In the fiddly fingers area, the children have been exploring the use of tongs, chopsticks and tweezers to pick up pompoms and ‘noodles’ (wool).
On Thursday, they all explored some Chinese food – egg fried rice, noodles and prawn crackers – most children thought they were yummy! The children have also enjoyed listening to some Chinese music and playing with dancing Chinese lion puppets, which inspired them to start their own dragon dance.
On Thursday, we were joined by Lily, from the music team, who provided a wonderful creative whole body music experience for the children – this will be continuing for the next 9 weeks, and we are very excited to see what else Lily has in store for us.
Stars of the day were Alexander, Martin, Ava-Rose, James and Dylan – well done to you all.
