Oak View Academy recognises the importance of good attendance and the impact it has on children’s progress, attainment, enjoyment of and relationships within school. We use the Studybugs app for reporting absence and illnesses. Please use the following link to report a child’s absence. Studybugs
It is really important that children learn how to be punctual in life. To support that aim, we insist on punctuality at school.
School begins at 8.30am each day and we expect all children in school at that time. We run a breakfast club from 8am to support working parents. If you would like your child to attend, please contact the school office to book them in.
Children who arrive after the register is taken each morning will be marked as late. Children who arrive more than 20 minutes late are marked absent for the session in line with Government guidance. Any children who arrive late to school need to be brought to the school office by their parent/responsible adult.
If your child is absent, parents/carers should inform the school on the first day of absence, and each day of absence thereafter, stating the reason. This can be done via Parent Mail or by ringing the school office (01606 288118).
The school office will make telephone contact with home when a child is absent and the parent/carer has not notified the school of the absence. If no contact can be achieved or the reason for absence is not accepted the absence will be unauthorised.
If your child is ill in school, we will contact you by phone so that he/she can be collected promptly.
Wherever possible, please make medical appointments outside the school day as this is disruptive for your child’s learning. However, we do recognise that some appointments cannot be changed or can only take place during the school day. In this instance, please bring your child into school and collect them from the school office when they need to leave school. So that the absence can be recorded correctly on the register, we require proof of medical appointments. This can be in the form of a letter, an appointment card, or a text/email reminder on your mobile phone.
Holidays in Term Time
A child’s absence during term time seriously disrupts their continuity of learning. Not only do they miss the teaching on the days they are away, but also they are less prepared for the lessons building on that teaching when they return to school. There is a consequent risk of under achievement, which we must seek to avoid. Clearly, there are times when children are unwell and cannot avoid being absent from school. Absence for any reason other than sickness must be avoided.
In September 2013, the Government changed the law so that Headteachers can only authorise absence in very exceptional circumstances.
If parents/carers need to request Leave of Absence in Term Time, they must complete a ‘Request for Leave of Absence’ form available from the school office.
Unauthorised absences may result in a fine by Cheshire West and Chester Council.
